Make your Social Media Accessible

The first step in this learning path is making your social media posts accessible! This section has webinars and a checklist you can follow to ensure your library’s social media accounts and posts are accessible to all patrons. The webinars include demonstrations by people with lived experience.

The total length to complete this section is approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes.

  1. Watch the Social Media Platform webinar to learn about multiple platforms’ accessibility advantages and barriers, with recorded demonstrations to show how inaccessible social media platforms can be (1 hour).
  2. Follow the Checklist for Creating Accessible Social Media to increase the number of people your information will reach. If your social media is accessible, it reflects positively on your library because you create an inclusive environment for all patrons (20 minutes).
  3. In the Accessible Social Media webinar, we discuss how you can make your social media posts accessible and inclusive, allowing everyone to access your information (1 hour).
  4. The Presentation Slides for the Accessible Social Media Webinar are also available if you would like to follow along with the webinar (1 hour and 30 minutes).
  5. Watch the Creating Accessible Social Media and Marketing Discussion Panel as experts discuss the importance of including alt text to create accessible social media and marketing materials (1 hour and 15 minutes).

Make your Marketing Materials Accessible

Up next, let’s build on our knowledge of accessible social media posts and start creating accessible marketing materials. This section includes items like creating accessible handouts, webpages, and newsletters.

This helps ensure that the content you present is accessible to everyone, and they can access and understand the information you are marketing. (38 minutes)
  3. The Accessible Emails Checklist contains best practices to ensure that people with multiple print disabilities can easily consume the content of an email or, more specifically for this learning path, a library newsletter. (20 minutes)
  4. The Website Accessibility Checklist will help you provide accessible marketing information online. It provides you guidelines on what to follow or what to ask for when building accessible web pages. (15 minutes)
  5. The Adding Alt Text and Long Descriptions Checklist is a great resource with examples that provide information on how to create alternative text and long descriptions for images, including complex content such as infographics, charts, and maps. (20 minutes)
